Learning through play

January 11th, 2010

Toys that help your child learn not only aids brain development but also assists in hand eye coordination, improving gross motor skills, communication skills, confidence building and problem solving.

Children have always learnt through play, it is a great way to help them to develop and grow in an environment that is structured but informal. Educational toys are a great way to help your child learn through play and they come in a variety of different, colours, shapes, textures etc.

They help children to explore and discover things about the world around them and also discover things about themselves.

Children are able to absorb a great deal of information every day and the more new opportunities they come across the more they will learn.

It is important that as adults we let our children come up with their own ideas and not to take over. For example with building blocks- show them that the blocks can stack on top of each other to make things- but let them discover what they can then build with them.

Some more tips for helping your child play with educational toys are:

  • Follow your child’s lead- watch your child play with a toy – if its not the right way  let them know its ok- don’t get cross and keep showing them the right way- show them a couple of times and then let them work it out for themselves
  • Go slowly- don’t get frustrated if they don’t pick up something straightway- like all  new skills, they need to practice and learn at their own pace
  • Don’t over stimulate- although it is fun playing and teaching your child- try not to do too many things at once as they get confused and won’t be able to concentrate, also they need to rest too!
  • Repeat tasks and games- the more children practices, the more the learning continues.

Learning through play is not only educational and helps to aid your child’s development, don’t forget its fun for both of you too!!
