Teething

October 22nd, 2009

Teething is one of the great milestones of your baby’s development and some babies will find the process easy, while others can find it more uncomfortable.

On average the first tooth comes in during the seventh month, although it can arrive as early as three months, as late as a year, or in rare cases even earlier or later. The symptoms of teething vary from child to child. The list below shows symptoms that a teething baby may experience.

However some of these symptoms are common with other things such as illness, so it may be better to check with a professional.

  • Irritability- as the little tooth comes closer to the surface, it may be a bit sharp for them and their gums may become sore and painful which could lead to your baby becoming fussy.
  • Drooling- At about 3 to 4 months old your baby may start drooling more often then they normally too- this is because teething simulates drooling.
  • Biting and gnawing- When your baby starts teething, you will notice that they will try gnawing anything they can get their gums around. This gnawing aids them as the pressure from biting on something relieves the pressure on the gums.
  • Fitful sleep- Teething pain happens both throughout the day and night. So if baby is in pain at night you may find baby is waking more often.

There are several things that you can try to help ease the pain of teething; some work and some don’t, but its all worth a try to try and relieve baby. Teething rings and toys which can be chilled can bring extra relief and helps with any raised temperature.

Also you may find your baby will just like trying to chew on your fingers to help relieve the pressure.

The teething process will come and go just like so many other things with new babies.  Keep trying different things until you find what provides the best relief for your child
